Essential car supplies for a memorable safari: Your ultimate packing guide

When embarking on a road trip in Uganda, it is crucial to ensure that you are equipped with the necessary essential car supplies  to guarantee a safe and enjoyable journey. A typical safari road trip is usually a long one, and lasts several hours so you need to be prepared in case of any uncertainties.

City drivers can do without some of these items since they are never too far from mechanics or hospitals. If you are driving in a rural area or are planning a long road trip, it’s always a good idea to double check some emergency essentials before heading out on the road.

A lot can happen on your journey to explore the pearl of Africa. Even after double checking and test driving your rental car, it may still breakdown, or you may experience a mechanical/medical emergency and not have help nearby.

Car essentials range from emergency tools, medical supplies, navigation/ communication tools, and maintenance and repair supplies.
This blog brings sheds light into some of the essentials or must-haves for a stress-free safari adventure.

First-aid kit

Your health is a paramount on a safari trip but it could take an unexpected spin along the trip or you could just get a medical emergency. This could be as a result of insect/mosquito bites, trying out new foods which may not sit well with you, allergies, sprains, cuts, strains and so much more.

Food poisoning is one of the most common medical emergencies so whatever you park in your emergency kit, be sure to have something for your stomach. Other items in the first aid kit may include band aids/ bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, Antihistamines and any medications you may need.

Jumper cables/ jump starter

Batteries have a habit of dying out of the blue and jumper cables can help you jump-start your car if this happens. If your vehicle’s battery dies, it’s not always efficient or even likely that you can depend on a helpful passer-by to supply you with a jumpstart. However, jumper cables alone are not enough to get your engine revved up again.

There are now modern compact battery jump-starter kits which also come with USB connections to keep all of your devices charged. Whether you need to jump start a vehicle or simply need to recharge your phone, a jump-starter kit is a great item to have in the car.

Spare tire and tire-changing equipment

A flat tire is every driver’s worst nightmare! It is very inconveniencing and may steal a lot of your time making you fall behind on your schedule. It is important to have a spare tyre, lug wrench and car jack to help you out in this situation. It is also useless to have these items and you can’t change a flat!

Reflective triangles or road flares

When you get stranded in an area where there id not much human presence, reflective triangles and flares come in handy.
These can help alert other drivers or any authorities about your presence if you’re stranded on the side of the road.

Fire extinguisher

A fire extinguisher comes in handy to help put out small fires, such as those caused by an engine or electrical malfunction.

GPS device or smartphone with GPS app

A GPS device or a smartphone with a GPS app will help you navigate unfamiliar roads. Physical maps may also serve as a backup in case your GPS device or smartphone loses signal. Also consider downloading offline maps when driving in areas with poor cellular connection.

Cell phone and charger

Keeping in touch with family and friends is essential on any road trip. A cell phone will help you stay in touch with family and friends, and a charger can ensure your phone stays powered up.

Snacks and water

Bringing snacks and water keep you energized and hydrated during long drives. Snacks and water can be handy during long trips or unexpected delays. Consider non-perishable snacks like energy bars, dried fruits, or nuts because they won’t spoil quickly. Store water in a small cooler with reusable ice packs to keep it fresh and do not forget to refill every chance you get.

Blankets and emergency sweaters

When your safari trip falls in the wet season, blankets or emergency sweaters can help keep you warm if you’re stranded in cold weather. Uganda is a relatively cold place during the rainy season and it is even colder in the mountainous areas so these will really help you out.
Flashlight and extra batteries
A flashlight can provide light in the dark, and extra batteries can ensure it keeps working.

Entertainment

What is a road trip without some fun! Bringing along music, audiobooks, movies or podcasts can help pass the time during long drives. Most safari vehicles are equipped with sound systems and Bluetooth connectivity to ensure that you play your favorite music on your journey.

Oil and fluids

Usually, car rental companies service their cars before renting them out but it is still important to check your vehicle’s oil and fluids before embarking on your trip. Some people actually bring along extra fuel in a can when they’re headed to remote areas because fuel pumps may be hard to find there.

Since all cars are different, it is essential to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific recommendations on what to bring along on a road trip, and familiarize yourself with the car before heading out on your long trip.
